A STONE IS TAKEN FROM THE EXCAVATED SPOIL OF A GRAVE AND POLISHED BY HAND.

it was

something of a small eureka moment

watching them lower you in
and then they covered you with earth

Something of the volume that once was
now replaced

in the silence that was

the sound of the machinery under sunshine

replaced
by only feeling and memory

for as long as that might last

because you’re not coming back to refresh said thoughts or feelings

so I’ll take them from this place here

standing above you
where my feet create the friction to move me forever away

in space, and in time

here where my mind slowly drifts
from this geography, and this memory, and this feeling, and all other associated summations

I’ll take them and retrace them

polishing is the process of losing the details through thoroughly applied friction
as demonstrated by the headstone that now marks your stasis

and the path that leads home from here
